Credit Card Tools to Prevent Overdraft

[10/16/2007]
Credit Card Tools to Prevent Overdraft

These overdraft fees from the very beginning of bank credit system have been a headache of all consumers. Different bank mistakes, like early request for repayment or "simple" miscalculation, people's own irresponsible activity - everything leads to overload of checking account.

In this case, maybe the most common decision is just to be more accurate. But it doesn't work effectively, because people are humans with their inherent behavior. Also banks would prefer to use your savings to cover the expenditures rather than wait for your reaction. So, what can be done in order to prevent tangible financial losses? Let's look how it is decided within credit cards.

The first mechanism of overdraft protection within credit card deals is the whole system of different rates and fees (though a bit unclear sometimes), that is always ready for your mistakes. Late payments - and the rates begin to charge you. You may surely tell that here is nothing new for consumers. Well, unlike the checking account system, your credit card usually is right at your pocket and so you have more possibilities to observe your account whenever you want it.

The second mechanism depends on the concrete contract terms. The bank can build-in the overdraft limit on your credit card. This looks as much more effective solution, because you just pay for what you can pay. No more, no less. Otherwise the bank simply declines your "check".

So, you may say that such method is just a bank's violence over your freedom of choice. But what else can be done, when even the most disciplined clients sometimes show inattentiveness? At least this automatic cut of your losses will only help you to stay "on line". The feature is especially expected in consumers credit cards, because usual people have much more individual risks. Of course, together with limited overdraft, banks can propose (or oblige) to pay the overdraft fee, though as a rule these fees are flat and not so catastrophic if you are able to repay.

The third quite effective way of saving money can be found in the concept of grace period - it only slightly varies, usually around 25 days. Thus you get almost a whole month for quiet decision of your probable credit problems.

Please, do not forget to ask your card issuer about the fraud protection. Connecting the problems of overdraft card defense, a criminal person can find some easy chances to steal your money "from nothing". And here is still hard situation for consumers, because normally banks prefer to give you zero-liability level.

The most efficient method of overdraft management may be found on the basis of tools combination. For example, if you have your checking account at some bank, then try to ask them to give you a credit card. In this way you would be able to get the lowest APR and other conditions (e.g. - fee free offer). Of course, I can't state it as the absolute rule. However, there is one idea, which I can use bona fide. I mean - we live in the global world with its advanced communication tools, like different net bank services. So - you have all the toolbox: watching the new key events, analyzing old and new credit card offers, online applying; the whole multitude of facilities. Just look what they change...

The economic recession affected not just financial sphere, it also affected politics, and even education. The US government hurled pretty much all effort into surmounting the crisis and restoring the economic sector. Other sectors are paid less attention at the moment. But New York State Authorities try to control all sectors and departments and react to the emerging problems on time.
The Governor of New York David A. Paterson announced the upcoming launch of a low-cost student loan program created to help 45,000 students of public and private colleges in New York State cope with tuition increases and secure credit. The final version of the program is still being discussed. But its appearance is just a matter of time.

As the financial crisis keeps raging, banks and credit companies are incurring more losses and desperately trying to get back on track. The governmental financial rescue programs do not seem to bring the banking sector any significant relief so far. And banks try to handle problems on their own.
No secret and no credit card news to anyone that in the attempts to make it up for the losses, banks raise interest rates on loans, cut credit lines, charge higher fees and tighten lending standards. Business loans, mortgages and credit cards became harder to qualify for. The latest quarterly survey conducted by the Federal Reserve shows that banks have tightened standards even more over the past three months.
