Expecting a Baby? Don't End up with Credit Card Debt!

[04/29/2008]
Credit Card Debt

Children always bring happiness in the live of their parents. Many parents can't wait till this wonderful event - the new birth comes in their homes. They search for more and more credit card deals in order to decorate the nursery; buy cute tiny outfits, dippers and toys. But everyone knows that all these items are not very cheap and without some planning parents can find themselves in huge credit card debt. According to the latest survey only 57% of expecting parents answered that they were financially prepared for the birth of a new child, while 43% felt that they were not. So what are expecting parents supposed to do in order not to end up in debt?

There are student credit cards, gasoline credit cards, hotel rewards plastics and what not, but there are no cards for expecting parents! So the way out is creating a realistic plan. Of course, it does not ensure success, but at least you will be grounded in reality!

  • Remember that expensive doesn't mean the best! Certainly every parent wants to provide his or her baby with the most luxurious things, but there are cheaper models of the same quality! According to the survey, 54% of new parents claim that they overspend on a car seat.
  • Find out exactly how much you are going to spend on baby items. Visa credit card company has created a Budgeting for Baby Calculator in order to help the parents go through this difficult process.

Then you should pay off your current credit cards. Newborns bring a lot of new expenses to the family and if you have a credit card debt you have to pay it off, it will be extremely difficult for you to manage your finances! It will be better off to start the new life of your family with clean state. It is not that difficult, you just have to pay off all plastics before the birth of your child.

If you are planning to use best credit cards after the birth of your kid, make sure that you take a firm control of them and pay them off every month! You may apply for a credit card that offers cash rebates and deposit them into a college saving plan. But remember that if you don't pay off your balance in full every month, interest payments can outweigh all rewards you have earned!

Julie McCray and her husband Nick (who became happy parents of little Suzy 4 months ago) advise all new parents to save enough money for out of pocket delivery costs. It is well-known that medical service is extremely expensive. Julie and Nick paid over $3000 for hospital charges! They were not ready to spend that much! They only saved $1700. So it is a good idea to have enough money! Even if you don't spend it, you will need to have them after the birth of your baby!

If you want to have stable financial future after the birth of your kid, you should always have a plan and be prepared for the unexpected!
