Avoiding Late Payments and Fees on Credit Cards

[05/27/2008]
Credit Card Payments

If you are a credit cardholder, you more likely than not have faced a risk of being late on a credit card bill. And the reason does not necessarily have to do with irresponsibility or forgetfulness. In fact, there are many hazards in life when you can't just disregard circumstances and fulfill your obligations when due.

However, any problem has a solution and when it comes to being late on a payment, you have several options to consider. Making the right use of them, you will never have a late payment hurt your finances.

If you are an obliging person by nature with good and stable income and an emergency fund at your fingertips, the best way for you to avoid late fees is to simply pay the bill. You can choose from a variety of types of payments, such as checks, money orders or online payments, but each single case requires that you do one and the same thing - read and follow the guidelines featured on the back of the bill.

These guidelines instruct you how to make a payment, set the deadline and specify the payment address. Following the guidelines precisely will ensure that your bill arrives on time and your good credit score does not get a hit.

Then, there is a type of cardholders who always have cash about but not enough of it to make a full payment. Their best strategy is to make the minimum payment right the same day the bill arrives. Doing so, you protect yourself from the late fee on the one hand and reserve some days to add more money to your first payment on the other. This is a smart solution for those who tend to make full payments but are not always able to do so.

If you are one of those who are too quick to get into a financial trouble and run out of money at the wrong moment, the Skip-A-Payment Service is just for you. You should remember, however, that the service entails a number of fees for the privilege to use it. So, each time you resort to it, try to estimate its value in your particular situation. Maybe, it would be even better to incur a penalty payment than to pay twice as much.

Another option for you would be to move the payment due date. As of today, lots of banks and credit companies allow their customers to set due dates at a most convenient for them time, say on the day of the paycheck. If you take advantage of this opportunity, late payments will have no chances.

A smart solution to the problem of late payment fees has also been offered to forgetful or lazy credit consumers. Now they can extensively use "pay-by-phone" services and other express methods (express mail or Western Union) to be on time with a credit card bill payment. Suchlike services will charge you significant fees as all additional credit card conveniences are normally paid for and rather expensive.

So, you see, there're lots of paying alternatives available for you to avoid being charged late payment penalty fees. All you need to do is to determine which one suits your particular financial situation and payment habits.
