Credit Card in Travel: Pro et Contra of Usage
[10/09/2007]
When you decide to make a trip - especially abroad - do not hesitate to think about your way of financial behavior. American dollar now is losing its weight - so it's very important to calculate the means of assets usage.
At first you need to know your possible variants. Traditional way of traveler's checks, that once were a very popular tool to carry money abroad, today is increasingly being replaced by debit or credit cards. The last ones give usually better exchange rates and lower fees. But it's not the whole matter. You need to think more about best choices for you.
Good bonus of credit cards deals while being abroad is the fact that your purchases are transferred through the interbank exchange currency rate, which gives more profitable course than in the local currency exchanges. You will be obliged to pay some currency conversion fee by your card issuer - but generally they are really little (some 1-3% percents with such good credit cards as Visa or MasterCard). And they are even lower than those, which are charged on cash traveler's checks or converting dollar cash at the exchange bureaus. Though, for example, if you apply for a credit card of Capital One - you won't have fees at all.
Though different credit card services are constantly spreading widely, but there are still lots of places, such as restaurants, bars, shops and some hotels, where you will need to use cash. And even if you could pay by credit card it can happen that your bill will arrive right at your house's front doorstep - and there will be nobody to defray it. As a consequence you will deal with heavy charges on your credit card balance.
The very first thing you should do if you are abroad - don't forget to call your card issuer in order to know, which will be the applied fees to your purchases, especially in local currency. It's really important, because companies may change the rates without notice. Also you can inform your issuer about your traveling plans - otherwise your frequent international requests on your credit account may alert the fraud protection system.
Together with currency conversion fees of your issuers you need to be ready for merchant's fee also. These merchants - especially hotels - are fond of putting holds on your credit line for the sum of your possible bill. Although they are supposed to inform you about such situations, but just be ready for some sudden mistakes.
Of course do not forget that, being out of the U.S., you will lack your regular protection level. Different unfair merchants may multiply the charge on your credit line with the same purchase - or even it can be someone else's purchase that will be connected to your balance. So, gather all your receipts, bills, and checks - this will make it easier to work with credit report in order to dispute some mistaken charges with your creditor, because it can badly change your final credit score.

The economic recession affected not just financial sphere, it also affected politics, and even education. The US government hurled pretty much all effort into surmounting the crisis and restoring the economic sector. Other sectors are paid less attention at the moment. But New York State Authorities try to control all sectors and departments and react to the emerging problems on time.
The Governor of New York David A. Paterson announced the upcoming launch of a low-cost student loan program created to help 45,000 students of public and private colleges in New York State cope with tuition increases and secure credit. The final version of the program is still being discussed. But its appearance is just a matter of time.
As the financial crisis keeps raging, banks and credit companies are incurring more losses and desperately trying to get back on track. The governmental financial rescue programs do not seem to bring the banking sector any significant relief so far. And banks try to handle problems on their own.
No secret and no credit card news to anyone that in the attempts to make it up for the losses, banks raise interest rates on loans, cut credit lines, charge higher fees and tighten lending standards. Business loans, mortgages and credit cards became harder to qualify for. The latest quarterly survey conducted by the Federal Reserve shows that banks have tightened standards even more over the past three months.
The US economy slowdown and credit crisis have had American consumers by the leg. Everyone tries to deal with this difficult situation in their own way. Some people do their best to pay off credit card outstanding balances as soon as possible, so they do not accumulate additional interest. Some consumers try to reduce their plastics use frequency. Others just give up paying with credit cards.
According to the results of the recent survey, about 10% of American credit consumers have been spotted taking out cash advances on their plastics more often than in the past. High balances, as the survey showed, have become a heavy burden for cardholders. Who can save the situation? Americans anchor their hopes on the future President. Who they find the best candidate to fix the US economy?

I think that it is quite possible to take money in cash and on credit card while traveling.
