Carefully Take Advantage of Credit Card Offers

Sometimes it seems that every single credit card issuer under the sun has been given your name and week after week every one of them has sent you some kind of enticing letter in the mail. They say you have been pre-approved for their fantastic new credit card. They tell you that they can't wait to send you a brand new credit card that has all kinds of rewards and points and other perks.

Routinely, you worry about how much paper it takes to print this kind of thing as you toss the fat envelopes into the recycling box. You have a couple credit cards already and your credit rating is good. Why rock the boat?

Well, you may want to reconsider this approach. Because you do have a good credit rating and obviously all those credit card companies are very interested in you, you may actually be able to sign up for a very good deal. The rewards and perks given along with credit cards now are almost limitless and you could be doing yourself a big favour by taking the time to at least investigate what they have to offer lately.

Examine Terms and Conditions Thoroughly

Scoop some of those envelopes back out of the blue box and open them up. You will probably be a little surprised by what is on offer. There are now credit card deals that offer you points at retail chains where you shop frequently.

Some give travel points that can be saved up for your vacation and used for airfare, hotels and car rentals. Some credit cards offer points toward the purchase of a new vehicle. Many cards now offer rebates on your purchases and apply this to your balance. Some cards even offer to contribute to education savings accounts to help you save for your child's education.

Cash Back on Spending

The cards that offer cash back rebates usually determine the amount of the rebate based on your total yearly charges on the card. The rebate is expressed as a percentage of your total charged and the percentage varies from one card to another.

There may be conditions that apply before you can receive a rebate as well, so you will need to be very clear on everything before you choose this kind of card. For example, many cash back credit cards actually require you to carry a balance on the card in order to qualify for the rebate.

You must do the math on this. How much interest will you be paying over the course of the year just for the privilege of receiving the rebate? If you pay as much in interest as you get back, it certainly is not worth the perk. Also work into the calculation any yearly administration fees there may be on this card.

Rewards and Points

Credit cards that give you rewards can be extremely attractive. If you are trying to save for a holiday for example, a credit card that offers travel points can be something very useful for you. Most rewards and points given are a percentage of your total purchases on the credit card.

Rewards are often credited to you on a quarterly basis although some do calculate them monthly. Choosing a reward program is fairly easy if you know what you are working toward. Travel points for those who want to take a special holiday. Retail or department store points for those who want to shop or purchase a big ticket item.

Be sure you find out if there are any conditions that apply to the rewards program before you sign on. If a certain level of points must be accumulated before you can withdraw and use them for example. Make sure that you are not sacrificing a good interest rate on your credit card just to obtain rewards, especially if you do carry a balance on your card.

Once you do take a look at what is on offer lately from the credit card companies, you may very well choose to update your card to something a little more rewarding. Make sure to get all the details however before you make a decision. Compare what is being offered and only accept a card if it truly fits into your financial plans.

I'm against credit cards and no matter how many advantages there can be found I think that cards cause more problems than profit.
